BAMBOO GIRL ZINE NOMINATED FOR 2001 UTNE READER ALTERNATIVE PRESS AWARD
Utne Reader
http://www.utne.com/apa/
New York, NY, October 16, 2001 – Utne Reader, the nation's leading magazine of alternative ideas, announces the nomination of Bamboo Girl Zine for an Utne Reader Alternative Press Award in the category of Zines. Since 1989 these awards have showcased the best from the alternative press in categories ranging from reporting excellence to personal life, cultural and international coverage.
“Bamboo Girl Zine is a great example of creative, beyond-the-mainstream thinking, and we are proud to honor it with an Utne Reader Alternative Press Award nomination," said Jay Walljasper, Utne Reader Editorial Director.
Bamboo Girl Zine began in 1995, and is a twice-yearly publication with a circulation of 3,000, exploring issues most relevant to Filipinos, Asian & Pacific Islanders, and people of mixed Asian descent. It includes voices from various cultural/community activist levels, and people of color, feminist, and queer perspectives. Bamboo Girl is distributed nationally and internationally, and is sold at independent bookstores, community centers, and through distributors. It has been recognized by various publications such as Utne Reader, Village Voice, AsianWeek, Bust, Jane, A Reader’s Guide to the Underground Press, and Filipino Reporter.
Since 1989 these awards have showcased the best from the alternative press in categories including "General Excellence," "Best Local Coverage" and "Best New Title".. Utne Reader’s editors select nominee publications through their extensive reading process and careful examination, rather than a competition requiring entry forms and fees. In this way, Utne Reader honors the efforts of small, sometimes unnoticed publications that provide innovative, thought-provoking perspectives often ignored by mass media.
Utne Reader, the nation's leading digest of the alternative media, has a paid circulation of 225,000. In addition to the magazine and corresponding web site, (http://www.utne.com), the company recently launched Utne Communities (http://www.utne.com/communities), dedicated to helping educators, non-profits and companies develop successful online communities. In September, Utne Reader published two new books—Salons: The Joy of Conversation and Visionaries—in partnership with New Society Press.
