Bamboo Girl Coming to Ohio State University
If you’re anywhere near the Ohio State University vicinity, I’ll be in your neighborhood this week, Tuesday 11/12 & Wednesday 11/13. Come on down! I’ll be performing a 1 hour show of some spoken word/song Tuesday evening, and the workshops I’ll be conducting the next day will address violence against women, as well as teach some basic verbal and physical self defense. Here are the details:
Performance: Tuesday, Nov. 12th, 7:30, Conference Theatre, Ohio Union, 1739 N. High St, The Ohio State University
“FilipinaSpeak”
Through a mix of performance spoken word, song, and artistic bitching, Margarita Alcantara-Tan explores what it means to be American, Filipina, Asian, mixed blood, queer, and feminist. She seeks to create dialogue by intersecting these issues with personal and community struggles, and by challenging mainstream misconceptions of Asian America.
Workshops:
"Combating Violence Against Women"
Wednesday, Nov. 13, 6:30-7:30 p.m., Ohio Union, room 436
As co-coordinator of the Campaign for Safer Subway Stations (CSSS), which was launched last year in response to the rape and beating of an Asian American woman in the Canal Street Subway Station in Chinatown New York, Margarita will explore the topic of violence against women, particularly in the context of sexual assault.
"Bamboo Girl's Self Defense Workshop"
Wednesday, Nov. 13, 8-9 p.m., Ohio Union, room 436
This will be an introductory workshop on verbal and physical self-defense. Through basic tactics on handling everyday possibilities such as physical or verbal harassment, to more life threatening experiences such as possible assault, Margarita demonstrates how words, actions, choices, and everyday items affect one’s own safety. Though this workshop is open to both women and men, content will have an emphasis on women’s safety. Please wear comfortable clothing.
